The City College 9 Movement...
CityCollege9.com: A Celebrity Basketball Game was scheduled to take place during the middle of winter break at the City College of New York. Hosted by Puff Daddy and Heavy D, the event would be the highlight of December 1991. The hottest rap artists promised to be there and young people from all over the city converged on campus to attend. The game made headlines in the most of tragic of ways. City College 9 unravels the moments that counted down to the event, and the circumstances that took nine people away from their loved ones. It was a racially charged year. With Rodney Kings video-taped brutal arrest making headlines in the Spring of 1991 and the Crown Heights riot spinning New York City into a turmoil that August, the circumstances of the City College 9 event pierce through any finger pointing. It instead lets us witness how prejudices become institutionalized and how that affects something as simple and benign as a charity basketball game in Harlem with rap stars. Upcoming Screenings: Screening @ Reeladelphia, which is an extension of the Philly Underground Music & Philm Festival (PUMP), an annual Urban Film & Music Festival held in Philadelphia.
